SW has been a cash grab since 1983.

Disney is just following in that tradition.

Actually, it was already after 1980. On ROTJ Lucas was cashing in big time.

He was better in rots than he was in Rotj. Do you agree ?

I dunno... he died immediately. Dooku was a much more interesting character than we got to see. Underused in both AOTC and ROTS.

They probably decided to play it safe until they get their $4Billion back, and save the risks for after.

I'm pretty sure they'll play it safe until as long as there are stupid fanboys supporting them for doing so.

Doubt it. How many times will people flock to see nostslgia? It's something that can work as a one off IMO.

6 if we're using Star Wars as a base.

Which is why I said since 1983 rather than afterwards.

I thought Disney already made their money back with all of their merchandising. Would have figured charging full retail price for 10-30 year old movies may have made Disney more than enough bank even before TFA's debut.

This movie was never in danger of not making it's money back. This could have been the most experimental film in all of cinema and it would turn a profit solely based on the name.

The reason the film is similar to ANH is because they want to appeal to those who loved the originals, hated the prequels, and have been itching for a "real" Star Wars film. They do this because said people can then take their disposable income and repeatedly watch a movie like 3-10 times and give them more money. It worked.

👆

And one of the people in this very forum predicted that this is exactly what Disney would do. I don't remember who it was. PVS (I forget his actual forum name, these days)?

TFA = "Guys! It's not the PT. Love it!"

Normally I'd be the guy who goes through old pages of threads to find that stuff out but I don't care enough in this case.

I guess this explains why my local amc theater has been crowded for the past 3 weeks. Can't think of any other reason why so many people would be in a movie theater during the middle of a business day...least where I'm from.

Hope whoever was in charge of marketing, and the people that did said marketing, got a raise or something.

I think everyone gets paid well. World wide box office: almost 2 billion dollars... If JJ has a percentage on this movie, he can retire now. Comfortably.

Well, the way the entire marketing was set up before it was made/released was already set to cash in big time. For which I cannot blame Lucas. If you make something people love, why not make a buck.

Too bad since the SE he started making things that made a buck, bit that people didn't love so much...

I disagree and think Ewan Macgregor's portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi was delightful

Ewan never struck me once as a Jedi to be feared or respected.
Sure he had good fighting skills but he never had that mystical allure about him that other Jedis did.
I honestly can't recall any scene where his persona stood out from the rest of the cast. He lacked that authoritative quality that Alec Guiness possessed.

^ I think the majority disagree with you there. Ewan and Ian were the highlights of the Prequels (with the exception of Ep.1 for Ewan).

And I reckon Obi-Wan Kenobi is far more popular today than he was Pre-Prequels. Alec's performance was more Iconic however.

It was.

I wish Ewan's part was written a bit more iconic. And consistent.

As an actor, I just can't see Ewan in an action role, much less a hero.
A good % of his movies have been drama or RomComs.
He was decent in The Island but he's not a scene stealer IMO.

How's that sequel to Trainspotting coming along? 😉

I'm not sure Iconic's something you write into the script. It's just something that happens or it doesn't.

Ewan's Obi-Wan was more of an entertaining character for the audience, like a Poe Dameron or even a Han Solo. Whilst Alec's Obi-Wan was a carefully used Mentor figure that we as the audience immediately listen to, to understand the plot better.

Ha! My point exactly!

He's got over 50 films to his credit but everybody always refers to just this one.

Very few look at him & think, Obi Wan.

Urmm pretty sure most people do look at him and think Obi-Wan. In fact almost impossible for him to have an interview without his role in Star Wars being brought up.

Hardly the same for say Natalie Portman.
