Many trans folks worry that they will pursue medical interventions and still not pass, and will wish they had not pursued them at all. But very rarely does that turn out to be the case. More often than not, they wish they had done it sooner, because they could have been happier instead of worrying about things that did not happen.
That's great, but they need to wait until they're 18 to make that choice, if that's what you're getting at.

What if they were emancipated at age 16! What then?!

In the UK, you can have sex at 16. So tbh maybe I should lower it to that. But I remember being 16, and how impressionable I was, how immature I was. Many others would be like that. I could have been convinced to cut my willy wang wonka off by some money-hungry doctor. That'd be heartbreaking. I like my willy wang wonka, I want to keep my willy wang wonka.

I think it’s generally pretty wise to wait until adulthood to make such drastic life altering decisions. But I also think prior to 18 or 16 or whatever magic age one becomes capable of making good decisions, it’s something for the parents and the child in unison should decide.

I am addressing you. You wish you were born female, but seem to have resigned yourself to remaining a man, because you think that if you transitioned you would be simulacrum of a woman. And I am simply telling you that if you transitioned, even if you did not seamlessly reintegrate into society as female, that you may still be really happy. Too often in life people let the perfect be the enemy of the good, and they think that if they cannot achieve everything they want, that there is no sense in trying to have some or even most of it. Those options are there if you want them.

first off, no disrespect whatsoever is intended here. seriously.

if you're a male who identifies as female: cool. if you're a female who identifies as male: great. if you're either of the above and identify as a damn unicorn: awesome. anything can apply here.

but my question is- why do they care so much that their peers also identify them by their gender/pronoun of choice? why can't they just be content with the personal choice they've made and just leave it at that? why should other people be bashed for "assuming a gender"?

as long as YOU feel good about yourself, why give two shits what other people call you?

My theory is that the only reason this is a discussion is because the media likes to give attention to people like "macho ma'am" who blow up about this sort of thing. Meanwhile in the real world most people are prepared to be respectful and understanding on both sides.

How many people here actually have personal experiences of having their "head bitten off" for misgendering someone?

In the real world, people interact with transgender people every day and may not know it. It is when people want to use transgender identities as a wedge issue that they dig up instances like this to caricature transgender people and discredit the movement for their rights.

Nah, the parents do not have a say. That opens up so many avenues for child abuse. Which we are already seeing from child transitioners de-transitioning.

Corrupt doctors, crazy ideological parents. The only safeguard we have is the age barrier.

Legally I imagine the parents do have a say though, yes?

@Surtur: Well, you can't blame a duck for acting like a duck lol. Quacking is just so natural for them why would they not do it?

thank god no state in the USA made it so some mentally ill teens could get sex changes for free without parental permission

Haha it would be sad if Oregon did that. Right guys? The left would come out against it.

And I'd be better than every single lefty who didn't, that is for sure.

1,000 times better, in fact.

to the point where their spouses and children should feel shame for any relation.

Well I have no spouse or children so I have nothing to worry about then.

but even if u did would it matter since surely u aren't in favor of 15 yr. olds getting free sex changes without parental permission

i mean what crazed person would be in favor of that

Nobody but the individual should have a say, and they can have their say when they come of age.

They're free?

Actually Scribble raised a good point about child abuse, so even with parental guidance it's probably not a good idea.

I'm not a fan of arbitrary age limits for things but whatever.
