Because from my understanding, same sex relationships are condemned in Christianity.

So the Pope saying same sex civil unions are okay, flies in the face of that.

That’s how change happens. Someone with influence has to say something that stupid people think is wrong initially.

I’d say he’s just recognizing that he lives in the real world, the modern world, and not the one from 2000 years ago when the Bible was written.

Their religion is based off the Bible and if you believe Christians, Gods' word is infallible.

They’ve made changes before. They can again.

As for what he said as being controversial or not, sure, if you are no real Christian I suppose that wouldn't be seen as controversial but anyone who has Bible knowledge on what it says about homosexuality it is very controversial. It just proves that the pope is no real Christian.
