This is the first time since Kirby handled him that I've thought Darkseid is an interesting character.
Pretty much since Kirby, Darkseid has been treated as kind of stereotypical, cut-out cardboard stand in for "evil."
Morrison's taken that cliche and pushed it further, making Darkseid the culmination of mankind's inhumanity to man: the paradigm of darkness.
The Metron/Anthro "Promotheus" scene was clever: Fire; cigarette; Green Lantern ring. I like the idea (and the way it ties into Seven Soldiers, of the space gods lead by warlike O'ryan) of the News Gods influencing, subtly the course of human history.
It's wonderful the way that Morrison is bringing together past story ideas; the culmination of mankind into the "Fifth World" gods, Darkseid falling backwards in time and creating the Dark Side club in order to control mankind.
The Manhunter's death (sorry, spoiler alert!) while sad, was spot on for what I think he's going for. The basic underlying linchpin of DC New Earth has shifted. Remember in Morrison's first foray into the Crime Syndicate, how he informed us (well, he informed us by proxy of Owlman ) that the CS couldn't achieve victory in the Positive Matter Universe because it's basic paradigmatic zeitgeist is good? The death of J'onn J'onnz is a brilliant example of how Darkseid's victory in the heavens shifts that: rather than go out in a blaze of glory in a noble death, the Martian was destroyed at the feet of group of cheering villains, while the Human Flame recorded it on his phone. The Human Flame thing? Brilliant. Human Flame; read Jungian ubersoul, collective unconsciousness, read Buddhist Samsara, Hindu Atman is Brahman.
Dan Turpin (what a wonderful character for the street-level perspective!) discovering a New God of good laying in garbage? Perfect. Orion's last words were indicative of Morrison's ability to write perfect epic dialogue: "He is in all of you. Fight." Haven't seen Kirby-esque over-the-top, apocalyptic language that good, that perfectly simple since the Mageddon arc. "Behold! The Armies of Man, as foretold in Prophecy!" or "The terrain itself is techno-active!: (a sentence I go out of my way to use on at least a daily basis).
Glorious Godfrey as an evangelist? The religious metaphors employed by Darkseid? Libra's sermon? Clever, clever use of biblical stuff.
And great New God redesigns, in this and Sketch Book . A perfect example of transition something to be more modern while maintaining vast reverence for the original concept.
Anyways, loved it. A little slow, but it is the first issue, so that's forgiven. Very much looking forward to the next issue; I also think this might be the first time I buy all the main tie-ins; Revelations, Beyond, and Three Worlds at least.
