Yes, it is. If no one went to see it, SW would shut down today. SW is also a product. So this is certainly a reboot.

a true 'reboot' is when the previous film canon is disacknowledged/ignored.

well it WAS that simple. then jj came along and confused the issue with star trek

To reboot means to discard all continuity in an established series in order to recreate its characters, timeline and backstory from the beginning.

It's definitely a continuation, though.

Why ermm?

the prequels however. there's a trilogy crying for a reboot.

I think there's a hidden pseudo spoiler in there Imp

Shit! Sorry, sorry!!! Fixed!

No, a remake.

In essence a reboot is a restarting so you can make more. You could start over from scratch (like Nolan's Batman series or the Amazing Spiderman series). You could also continue where one left off.

In a way that is what JJ's Star Trek did: the original Spock was old, time jump and everything starts again.

From a movie business pov TFA is as good a reboot as anything. And, mind you, it IS also a business. Now they can make new toys, new clothing, new DVD's/Blu rays, new books, new comics, new spin offs for tv or books or comics, new replica's of weapons etc etc. Now that's a reboot.

Spoiler:
The trilogy will suffer a lot if Rey turns out to be a Skywalker. Seriously. She doesn't have to be one, and would make her similar to Anakin in that she is a random with immense potential in the force. Its time they move away from the Skywalkers and Solos to make room for more stories. My 2 cents anyway.

yeah i didnt think that one through. remake, then.

agreed that from a cinema/business/marketing perspective it is entirely new territory. even the PT is too distant to be of any relevance there.

however this is just not a reboot.

oh forgot to mention: i didnt care for 3d.

on a standard screen, the ships struck me as miniaturized. some panning shots were blurry. i need to see this soon in good ol 2d

You should all get them, they are magical.

or i could just see a 2d show without sunglasses. that makes more sense.

Yes, when the option exists that's preferable. Oftentimes that is not the case, then these glasses are preferable to the 3D crap.

It does, but sometimes the best theaters only have 3D showings, which is my case. I have to see it in 3D or opt for a smaller screen with subpar sound. Which is what I'll likely have to do in my second showing.

Going to see if I can get a pair of those glasses from Amazon by tomorrow night. Thanks Bardy.

Figured getting prime seats while on the theater would be a bigger concern than the ticket for 2d/3d itself.

Couldn't open your link B42, but in case it's selling them, you can make your own.

Just came back from the show and I didn't like it.

- it was the same old plot and story as before. very very basic with no multiple layers.
- the new characters sucked and were uninteresting.
- it the same thing as star wars battle front, it may sound, look and feel like star wars at times, buts its not. its all style and no substance

abrams star trek is much much better than abrams star wars.

this movie gets a 5.5 out of 10 from me.

Obviously this is a first impression, and I might feel different about it after a while, but...

Spoiler:
It's not bad. It's not bad at all. It's actually good in places. Maybe even very good at points.

There is a lot, though, and I mean a LOT, of drawing from the old movies. Some of it is fun references and throwbacks, but some feels blatantly lifted from the original trilogy. The strange effect is that at times, it does feel very much like a Star Wars movie. And yet at others, it feels like Abrams took what Lucas had made, and tried a little too hard to put his own spin on it to the point where it felt like he just didn't "get" Star Wars.

****ing strange, I tell ya.

Like I said, it's not a bad movie by any means. I'll probably rewatch it when it comes out on bluray/dvd. Just not clamouring to go and see it again.

So yeah, sure some will disagree. Some might even agree. We'll see.

I agree with Pr a little bit.

Really? I thought the new characters were more interesting written with more depth than a lot of even the original trilogy

I actually thought the characters (both young AND old) were awesome in this movie, myself.
