Steven Zailian Takes On 'All The Kings Men'

Screenwriter Academy Award winner Steven Zaillian will direct All the King's Men, an adaptation of Robert Penn Warren's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about a populist Southern politician, according to The Hollywood Reporter .

Sean Penn (Mystic River) is being sought to play the role of Willie Stark, which earned Broderick Crawford an Oscar in the 1949 film version of the book.

Zaillian originally came on board in 2002 to write the adaptation of the novel, which is described as a faithful take on Warren's dissection of Louisiana politics. The book follows the political fortunes of Stark, whose character is loosely based on infamous politician Gov. Huey Long of Louisiana.

The production is aiming for a September shoot in New Orleans.
