Crouching Tiger Gets Second Chance

'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' looks set to be re-released in Japan, hoping to gain more public interest. PopcornUK reports:
Hollywood confirmed its love of all things Mandarin yesterday by awarding 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' ten Oscar nominations.
Now the film's makers are hoping to convince Japan to give the movie a second chance. The film has already been released in the country, but, unlike the rest of the world, the film has been ceremoniously ignored, picking up just $1.8m in eight weeks of release.

In contrast, the film became the number one Mandarin-language movie of all time in Taiwan (director Ang Lee's home country). Under Columbia TriStar's reissue plan, Taiwanese fans will be able to see the movie again.

The Chinese won't be getting a second look, though, which is probably just as well considering the movie's failure at the country's box office. Strained relations between China and Taiwan may have put a dampener on the film's popularity.

The rest of the world, meanwhile, is more than happy to keep on watching, and 'Tiger' has now become the biggest selling foreign film of all time, stealing the crown from Roberto Benigni's 'Life Is Beautiful'.
