'Dreamer' Kurt Russell To Make Directorial Debut

Kurt Russell is to star and make his directorial debut with Dreamer, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

True story-inspired project about a Kentucky horse trainer and his 11-year-old son who rescue a horse with a broken leg. The two then help nurse the animal back to health and take it to race in the Breeders' Cup. Russell is set to play the horse trainer.

"I'm a big horse-racing fan, and there are a lot of amazing horse stories out there," he said. "This one is an amalgamation of a lot of different stories."

Of the genre's appeal, Gatins said, "(Horse racing projects) are just very American stories."

"John has always wanted to direct, and we've always talked about this day and being there for him," Robbins said. "So it's great to see it happen. He wrote a great script, and he'll direct a great movie."

Production is pegged for a September start in Louisiana.
