Jack Black & Ben Stillers 'Envy' Gets Pushed Back
[Tuesday, March 16th, 2004]
A studio spokeswoman said that the move was strategic and that the later weekend was a better fit for the film.
One reason DreamWorks may have gotten cold feet is the surprise blockbuster perf of Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, which grossed $31.7 million in its third weekend.
Even without the Gospel factor, however, April 30 is a less competitive weekend than April 2.
Now Envy will go up against Lions Gate's Godsend, with Robert De Niro; New Line's Laws of Attraction, starring Pierce Brosnan; and Paramount's bitchy teen pic Mean Girls.
"April 2 is almost like a summer weekend, with Hellboy, an animated film, plus a comedy," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Exhibitor Relations. "DreamWorks knows what it's doing."
