Paul Schrader Takes On 'Exorcist Prequel'

Paul Schrader is in negotiations to direct the untitled prequel to "The Exorcist" for Morgan Creek Prods., reports The Hollywood Reporter.

He will be stepping in to take over the job that the late John Frankenheimer voluntarily stepped down from one month before his death.

Shooting on the prequel is expected to begin in the United Kingdom and Spain in November with Gabriel Mann, Liam Neeson and Australian actor Billy Crawford continuing to remain attached to the project.

The project traces the story of Father Merrin (Neeson) and his first encounter with the devil while doing missionary work in post-World War II Africa. While there, Merrin suffers from the horrors of war and loses his faith in God. When he meets the devil, he has to fight to save his beliefs.
