Sir Sean Connery turned down more than £10 million to return to the role of 007.

During the late Eighties the offer would have made him the highest paid actor in the world.

But the golden carrot failed to impress Connery who had just played James Bond in Never Say Never Again.

The veteran Oscar winner told Ananova: "They were talking wild sums back then to get me into another Bond.

"Much as I enjoyed the Bond films back in the Sixties, I needed a fresh challenge. A new direction.

"I could have just stayed where I was and made an incredible amount of money. Others would have done so. But not me.

"That isn't arrogance or me saying how wealthy I am. Far from it. I think I am being honest and putting people who say I watch the pennies in their place."

Connery now fights Scottish issues from his new hideaway in the Bahamas having lived in Marbella on Spain's Costa Del Sol for 20 years.
