Mummy Scares Off Competition

Studios are all going to be staying out of each others way this summer, report Variety. Universal's 'The Mummy Returns' kicks off the particularly crowded summer season May 4.

So far, distributors have been content to let the 'The Mummy Returns' sequel have that weekend to itself. Ditto for the Memorial Day session when Disney's 'Pearl Harbor' cruises into theaters and the July 27 frame, in which 20th Century Fox's 'Planet of the Apes' sits as the sole scheduled wide release.

"The summer starts with 'The Mummy Returns,' and it starts in a huge way," Universal distribution president Nikki Rocco said. "There's so much heat for the film out there. ...The trailer has been playing like gangbusters, and we know from polling that there's great anticipation out there for this sequel."
