Hogan Directs Live Action 'Peter Pan'

Universal Pictures has joined Columbia Pictures and Revolution Studios on production of the first live-action "Peter Pan," reports Variety

James M. Barrie's classic tale of the boy who refused to grow up will be directed by P.J. Hogan ("My Best Friend's Wedding") and produced by Red Wagon Entertainment's Lucy Fisher and Douglas Wick and by Patrick McCormack.

Hogan and Michael Goldenberg ("Contact") have adapted the project from Barrie's original story. Industrial Light & Magic will provide the CGI pixie dust to bring to life story elements such as Tinker Bell and Peter's vertiginous battles with Captain Hook. Scott Farrar (Oscar winner for "Cocoon") will serve as visual effects supervisor.

Filmmakers are conducting a worldwide casting search to find a young actor to play Peter Pan. Jason Isaacs has been cast as the villainous Captain Hook.

"This is 'Peter Pan' as J.M. Barrie originally intended -- a heroic, magical, real boy who fights pirates, saves children and never grows up," Hogan said. "I'm thrilled to bring this personal favorite to audiences around the world."

Principal photography begins this fall in Queensland, Australia, for a planned Christmas 2003 release.
