Director Brett Ratner Leaves 'Superman' Project

Brett RatnerDirector Brett Ratner has decided to leave the feature Superman, says Hollywood Reporter. He joined the project six months ago.

The move comes after an arduous casting process that was unsuccessful in finding an actor to play the title character. "I have chosen to withdraw as director of 'Superman,' " Ratner said. "The difficulty of casting the role of Superman has contributed to my decision. I appreciate the efforts of Warner Bros. and the entire production team during this process."

Last month, Josh Hartnett screen-tested for the role, but despite an offer to play Superman, he balked at the commitment to doing three consecutive features.

By the end of February, a new trio of actors emerged as top choices: Brendan Fraser, Paul Walker and newcomer Matthew Bomer. All three screen-tested, but two weeks ago, Walker pulled himself out of contention before Warner Bros. president Alan Horn could view all three candidates.

Fraser and Bomer remained in the mix, but Ratner's option expired Saturday, and the studio and remaining two actors parted ways by Monday.
