Director Mira Nair and Oscar-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes have come aboard to helm and adapt, respectively, a big-screen version of William Makepeace Thackeray's novel "Vanity Fair" for Universal Pictures, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Production aims to begin in late fall in the United Kingdom.

Set during the 1840s, "Fair" centers on a lower-class girl, Becky Sharp, who defies her poverty-stricken background to climb the London social ladder with her best friend, Amelia, by her side.

Sources said Reese Witherspoon is circling the project as her next starring vehicle.
