Variety reports that the Novel 'The Assumption of the Virgin' by Katie Campbell, is to be made into a movie. Juliette Binoche ('Chocolat') and Geoffrey Rush ('Quills'), who have both won Oscars last year and are also nominated this year are starring.

Also starring is Benicio Del Toro ('Traffic') and Chloe Sevigny ('Boys Don't Cry') who are both Oscar nominees. The stars are said to be in final negotiations about the film. Directing the movie is Walter Salles from Central Station.

The movie is scripted by Anthony Minghella (The Talented Mr. Ripley) and Leigh Jackson. The movie is set in Florence during the Renaissance, and is about a womanising monk painter (Del Toro) who falls in love with a religious nun, who poses for him.

"Lippi is a hedonistic, extraordinarily physical guy who, even though he's a monk, is a notorious womaniser who fell in love with a deeply religious nun," Sydney Pollack, who is executive producing the film with Minghella, told Variety. The movie is to begin shooting in autumn if the Actors and Writers strike is finished by then.
