Last Samurai To Be Remade

Scribes Joe Batteer and John Rice have inked a deal potentially worth seven figures to rewrite New Regency's 'The Last Samurai', report Variety.

Set in the 1870s during the demise of feudalism, 'The Last Samurai' centers on a psychologically scarred Civil War veteran who travels to Japan as a mercenary for hire. There he teams up with a samurai who helps the vet find inner peace.

Jumping off from the original script by Aaron and Mathew Benay, Batteer and Rice will add story depth and character complexity to the West-meets-East action drama.

"We became interested in the project as a relationship picture using the war as a backdrop instead of just a war picture," Batteer told Daily Variety.

"The relationship (between the veteran and the samurai) is a whole new element," added Rice.
