One of Hollywood's best-loved and most versatile actors, Jack Lemmon, has died of cancer aged 76, reports the BBC.

The star of 'Some Like It Hot' and 'The Odd Couple' had recently had surgery to remove his gall bladder and had pneumonia earlier in the year.

Lemmon was renowned for his versatile acting style ranging from comedy in 'The Apartment' to the drama of 'Days of Wine and Roses' and 'Glengarry Glen Ross.'

The Guardian film critic Derek Malcolm said: "It wasn't just that Lemmon was Hollywood's best comedian, he was also an actor of real stature in other parts."

"He was one of the most admired and best-loved of all those in Hollywood who consistently tried to do quality work."

Jonathan Romney, film critic for the Independent on Sunday said that it was this sense of "ordinariness" that endeared him to audiences.

"Lemmon was one of those actors whose persona came from his own personality," he said.

"He was prepared to look ridiculous and vulnerable and was more like a real person, complete with angularity and neurosis, than the majority of Hollywood actors are."
